For Giant Tiger, safety is not a talking point. It is a discipline built into every mile they run.
Headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, Giant Tiger has operated its private fleet, Tiger Trucking, since 1987. Today, the fleet includes 189 trucks, more than 500 trailers, and over 300 chassis and other assets, supporting a mix of refrigerated freight, container transport, and general merchandise distribution across Canada.
Over nearly four decades, the company has built one of the strongest safety records on the road. Giant Tiger has been repeatedly recognized by the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC) for its fleet safety performance, including top honors in the large fleet category. Their program is rooted in disciplined processes, rigorous training, and a commitment to continuous improvement, resulting in consistently low incident rates.
A Fleet Built Around Safety
For National Fleet Manager Justin Bauder, safety is the foundation of every operational decision. He points to Highway 401 as a daily reminder of the risks fleets face.
One of the most visible and dangerous contributors to those incidents is tire debris. Known as “road gators,” shredded tire fragments are a constant hazard. Over-the-road tire failures do not just impact the vehicle involved. They create risk for everyone on the road.
For Giant Tiger, that reality drives a simple objective: eliminate preventable tire failures.

“Highway 401 can be a warzone. You see incidents all the time.”

Turning Tire Management Into a Safety System
Giant Tiger first deployed Aperia’s Halo Tire Inflator in 2019, introducing automatic tire inflation as a way to better control one of the fleet’s most critical safety variables.
As the technology evolved, they expanded their deployment to Aperia’s latest generation Halo system, which includes fully integrated Halo Connect predictive analytics. Today, Halo and the connected platform is deployed across the fleet, combining automatic inflation with real-time visibility into tire performance.
From the outset, the objective was clear: prevent tire-related incidents before they happen. To validate the impact, Giant Tiger closely monitored performance during early deployment, including through Canadian winter conditions where tire pressure loss is most severe. The results were decisive. Halo-equipped tires maintained consistent pressure at setpoint throughout the coldest months, while non-equipped tires experienced significant pressure drops, often reaching double-digit under-inflation. That consistency translated into measurable gains:
- 12% tire life extension
- 1.12% MPG improvement
- -1.9 tons of CO₂ emitted per truck annually
More importantly, maintaining proper tire pressure significantly reduced the conditions that lead to roadside failures.

“Tires get run hard. Issues need to be addressed responsibly, not on the side of the road.”
Justin Bauder, National Fleet Manager
Since implementing Halo across the fleet, Giant Tiger has seen a significant reduction in emergency roadside service events, helping keep drivers out of high-risk roadside situations and improving overall fleet uptime.
From Limited Visibility to Full Control
While automatic inflation improved safety immediately, Halo Connect predictive analytics provided the visibility needed to manage risk proactively. Before Halo Connect insight into tire performance across the fleet was limited. Today, Giant Tiger has real-time visibility into tire conditions, allowing issues to be identified and addressed before they become problems. Alerts are monitored by fleet and maintenance supervisors, who coordinate directly with drivers to take action early. This structured process ensures issues are handled in controlled environments rather than on the roadside.
Built for Real-World Operations
A key reason for Halo’s success at Giant Tiger is how easily it fits into their operation. The system is designed for fast, straightforward installation and service, enabling teams to deploy and maintain it efficiently across a large fleet. That simplicity matters. Drivers and technicians are not burdened with complex diagnostics. Instead, the system maintains pressure automatically and provides clear direction when attention is needed.
Halo Connect integrates directly into Giant Tiger’s existing processes, reinforcing their disciplined, systems-driven approach to fleet management.

“We were flying blind before. Now we know what’s happening across the fleet. There could be a flat tire sitting in a yard somewhere, and I would know about it with Halo.
Justin Bauder, National Fleet Manager
A Safer, More Controlled Operation
With full fleet adoption of Halo automatic inflation and predictive analytics, Giant Tiger has strengthened control over one of the most critical risk areas in their operation. The fleet has achieved:
- Significant reduction in ERS incidents
- Earlier detection of tire-related risks
- More consistent, controlled tire performance
- Keeping drivers off the roadside and out of harm’s way
Leading with Safety
Giant Tiger continues to set the standard for what a safety-first fleet can achieve. By combining disciplined processes with proven technology, they have built an operation that prioritizes prevention, protects drivers, and performs at a high level every day. For Bauder, the mission remains clear:
“At the end of the day, it’s about reducing risk and making sure our drivers get home safely.”
